Setting up a VoIP home phone is easier than most people think. If you can plug in a modem and a phone, you can set up VoIP.
Before you start: quick checklist
- Stable internet connection
- A phone handset (any standard home phone)
- A VoIP adapter (ATA) or VoIP-capable phone
- An Ethernet cable (recommended)
Step 1: Place the adapter
For the best call quality, place the ATA close to your router/modem and connect it using Ethernet.
Step 2: Wiring
- Connect Ethernet from router → ATA
- Connect your phone to the ATA “Phone” port
- Power on the ATA
Step 3: Wait for registration
Most adapters take 1–3 minutes to register. Once registered, you should hear a dial tone.
Step 4: Test calls
- Call a mobile number
- Call a landline number
- Test voicemail (leave a message and retrieve it)
Step 5: If you’re porting a number
Keep your old service active until the port completes. Cancelling early can delay or fail a port.
Best practice
If your home Wi‑Fi is busy, connect the ATA with Ethernet and enable QoS on your router (if available).
